Rhythm

  • Do 5-Part Lap Map, making up your own rhythms. You can look at the Longy rhythms and choose ones you see there to try
  • Then do 5-Part rhythm the “old” way
  • stop if you make a mistake and figure out what the mistake was and which of the 3 causes of error it was

Scales, Chords, and Technique

Work on Eb Major scale, one hand at a time, then together

  • it’s good to look at your hands
  • figure out first where your black keys are, then try playing the scale

Technique:

  • Learn p. 12-17
  • use 3-10-3 for Winter Wind

Theory

Do p. 10-17 (it’s a lot, so do whatever you have time for)

Lessons

Learn Two Spirituals p. 32-33

  • play the chords on the top of page 32 first to get used to the I V7 chords
  • count out loud, but try to count in your head as it gets easier
  • do 3-10-3 to learn these

Performance

Keep practicing Theme by Haydn p. 12-13

  • use 3-10-3 to learn
  • write in counting and count out loud

Fairy Tale (I’m leaving this the same since I didn’t hear it this week)

  • continue working on the dynamics
  • work on async hands (hands not together). Let the RH fall slightly behind the LH
  • let’s use the rubato (speeding up and slowing down) as we talked about so it matches what’s going on in the song

Stars and Stripes

  • After practicing a section, go on to another section, then come back to the first one and play through it once. Do this for each part you practice. This is called Interleaved practice

Fairy Tale (I’m leaving this the same since I didn’t hear it this week)

  • play RH f  beat 1 and 2 and then add the LH “ghosting” the notes or just tapping the keys without pressing them down. Then press LH notes without sounding them, and then try to play while keeping RH f
  • work each phrase in the RH alone, coming up with different ideas on how to shape the phrase with dynamics, and deciding what the most important note might be, and working the dynamics around that
  • work on async hands (hands not together). Let the RH fall slightly behind the LH

Stars and Stripes

  • Copy these measures into your Practice Rotation spreadsheet, and practice them using 3-10-3
  • You can mix up the measures within the same color. So you can do the blue ones in order as listed one day, then a different order the next day. Write down the specific measures in the box that you practiced so you know what to work on the next day if you missed any measures
  • Also after practicing a section, go on to another section, then come back to the first one and play through it once. Do this for each part you practice. This is called Interleaved practice

Rhythm

4-Part Lap Map: improvise your own rhythm as your eyes are looking at the picture and following which beat you’re on

4-Part Longy rhythm:

  • Do this with tapping only beat 1 and whispering on dots

Think of which cause of error you made after you complete the above but had a mistake:

  1. Reaction: something new takes you by surprise. Cure: Eagle vision
  2. Anticipation: this can be daydreaming, or getting worried about a difficult part coming up. Cure: Eagle vision, get back into feeling your tapping, hearing your singing/whispering
  3. Looking Back: You look back to a mistake you just made and start talking to yourself about it. Cure: Tell the “bad coach” to stop, and keep moving forward

Theory

If you have time, go on to www.musictheory.net and click on Exercises, then Nite Identification (if you get a pop-up, select use web version). Click on the wheel to customize:

  • Clefs: grand staff
  • Range: Raise/lower the notes to be on the top line on Treble and bottom line of Bass
  • Accidentals: turn slider off

Now you should be able to go through and name these notes. Feel free to use your “cheat sheet” to help

Lessons

Learn Merrily, Hot Cross Buns, CDEFG March first. Just count on the long notes 1-2 for half note and 1-2-3-4 for whole notes

When those are easy, you can move on to March on D-E-F

  • write in the counting throughout both of these pieces
  • count out loud each time you play them

In Lessons book:

  • learn Firefly – focus on the first page, with counting out loud
  • try cycling through short sections like 1 or 2 measures rather than playing start to finish all the time
  • if you make a mistake, stop and figure out what the mistake was, then start from where you made the mistake
