Scales

G Major Scale, chords, and arpeggios 2 octaves hands together slowly

  • Curve fingers
  • Have the hand/arm angled outward
  • level wrist (not high and low), and relaxed elbows

Repertoire

Copy this schedule and follow it:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VDZbAwcwjlUsVpYZbUwRrXps59506TIQxm_B19xciRA/edit?usp=sharing

Nocturne:

  • pink measures:work on making them as musical as you can. Work on playing async hands (RH comes after LH), and use rubato to help make each phrase expressive
  • blue measures (I think you’ll have one day before your lesson, or it might be on your lesson day): work on rubato for ending, and work on transitions m. 30-31 so there are no pauses

Bach:

  • orange measures: pick only 3-5 notes to work on at a time for 3-10-3 to learn this first page. Play through once hands separately to figure out what your’e doing before playing 3-10-3 hands together for that segment. Make sure you take a break after 10 minutes
  • green measures: when that comes back in rotation, work on hands together only

Stars and Stripes:

  • we can work on your first day on this next lesson

Repertoire

Copy this schedule and follow it:

Nocturne:

  • for the blue measures, do 3-10-3 to help remember how they go. Once those are easy, just try playing through them at random times while practicing something else
  • for the pink measures, work on making the LH pp and the RH mf or louder. When this is easy, you can try using the soft pedal (left) to help get things softer overall

Bach:

  • pick only 3-5 notes to work on at a time for 3-10-3 to learn this first page. Feel free to just play through once hands separately to figure out what your’e doing before trying 3-10-3 hands together for that segment. Make sure you take a break after 10 minutes

Stars and Stripes:

  • don’t work on this yet until after your next lesson (as it is on the sheet)

  • Curve fingers
  • Have the hand/arm angled outward
  • level wrist (not high and low), and relaxed elbows

Repertoire

Kuhlau Sonatina Op 21 No 1

Poole Nocturne

  • Continue with  3-10-3 hands together
  • Don’t look at your hands as you have leaps – use the black keys and cues where your other fingers are to help you figure out where to leap to

Bach Invention No. 8 in F Major

  • this won’t be started this week, but when it’s ready in the rotation schedule, being practicing only those measures
  • Play the segment hands separately to get an idea of what you are supposed to play, then put hands together using 3-10-3. Under tempo is best!
  • Follow the rotation schedule for learning – note that after you’ve gone through and run out of “blocks”, you can play through that material each day

Prelude in C Minor by Bach –

  • learn in small sections (2 measures at a time) using 3-10-3: Play the section 3 times in a row, then wait 10 seconds, and play it another 3 times, then move on to the next section and do the same
  • count out loud to start, but basically you have a note on every 16th note

Performance

We’re going to focus on competition music for now. If you have time once you return you can do pieces from the books

Beethoven Ecossaise:

  • Do cycling, 2 measures at a time, go slowly if you make any mistakes or have hesitations.
  • Also practice putting in pauses right before you have a place of hesitation, allowing yourself to take as much time as you need to get ready before moving

Thursday: review m. 1-2, spend 10 minutes on m.3-4 with the above instructions, 10 minutes on m. 7-8, then 10 minutes on m. 9-10

Friday: spend 10 minutes on m. 13-14, 10 minutes playing through the whole thing to see what other measures need more work, then use up the next 10 minutes to work on those measures

Saturday: play through with repeats, work on any measures that need extra work 10 minutes at a time, three times total

Sunday: play through  3 times

Monday: go through very slowly 3 times (no repeats)

Tuesday: play through 3 times up to tempo, with repeats

here is link for sheet music:Ecossaise in G Major – Beethoven

In the Spirit:

Thursday: 10 minutes using cycling m. 9-10, 10 minutes m. 11-12, 10 minutes m. 13-16

Friday: review m. 1-16, then 10 minutes m. 17-18, 10 minutes m. 19-20, 10 minutes m. 21-24

Saturday: play through whole piece once, make note of anywhere that still needs work for tomorrow’s practice – write them down for yourself

Sunday: do three 10-minute segments working on problem areas you wrote down from yesterday’s practice

Monday: play through whole piece very slowly, with repeats

Tuesday: work three 10-minute segments on areas you are still struggling with
