Unit 1 duet: Eighths Are Enough

Repertoire

This week, pick one piece to do 10 minutes of focused practice, one piece to run-through, and one piece to rest.

In the Spirit  Etudes p. 20

  • slow practice throughout
  • spend extra time on m. 9-12, and m. 17-24

Left Alone Etudes p. 13

  • work on differentiating the melody from harmony by playing stems up notes as written, but ghost stems down. Repeat it a few times this way, and then play normally
  • m. 5-12 work stems down alone to get comfortable with fingering – don’t try to play these softly here
  • m. 8 work on playing stems down forte and staccato as you hold half note stems up for full value. Be sure your fingers 2-3-5 are very curved

Clementi Sonatina Op 36 No 1 mvt 1

  • Practice in short phrases (2-4 measures) playing 8th notes in long-short (swung) pattern, then repeat until easier (not perfect). Then do it in a short-long pattern, repeat until easier and it feels snappy. Then choose 8th-note runs to do hands separately in 3-note burets of speed, repeat until easier, then move to the 2nd note to begin counting to 3, repeat until easier, then start on 3rd notes to begin counting to 3 and repeat until easier
