ABOUT THE TEACHER

Erin Philleo, M.Mu.Ed.

Soprano, Pianist, Educator

Erin began her music studies at the age of 5 with piano lessons. She often sang with her family at home, and joined choirs in school. With encouragement from her parents to continue piano, she took lessons until she was 15, at which time she studied on her own. After high school, she enrolled at Miami University of Ohio, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Music in Voice. She continued on at University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point to obtain her Master’s in Music Education in Piano Pedagogy, where she also studied composition under Dr. Charles Young. Erin has maintained a private piano and voice studio since 1998, while she also continues to expand her musical knowledge through conferences, master classes, and private instruction. In 2002, she studied the Craft of Musical Communication with period instrument maker Keith Hill and pianist Marianne Ploger. In 2011 she moved to Boynton Beach, Florida to continue her studies and for performance opportunities. She has sang in Palm Beach Opera and Florida Grand Opera choruses, as well as premiered new operas and sung various solos in South Florida and Chicago. In 2022, Erin relocated to Titusville, FL where she teaches privately from her home studio.

Experienced Musical Training

Voice and Piano Lessons

Learn the best techniques on how to sing or play the piano from a classical perspective and be able to apply it to any style of music!

Voice Lessons

I believe that we are all born with an instrument inside of us, but like other physical activities one has to strengthen the muscles properly to get the desired results. You don’t run a 5k marathon without prior conditioning , and the same applies to singing. I teach not only how to strengthen the muscles involved in singing, but also how to get rid of tensions that can interfere with your sound.

Because we are both the instrument and the musician, a large part of lessons are spent on developing the instrument and then applying it to songs. While I teach mainly a classical technique, this can be applied to almost any style of music since the same muscles are used for them all. You simply make the stylistic changes so that you don’t sound like an opera singer singing country music. With this technique, you will develop confidence in your ability as the voice is consistent and better able to respond to how you want to express the music.

Piano Lessons

Playing piano can be at the same time quite easy to pick up, and one of the most difficult instruments to learn to play: it’s easy because all you have to do is press a key and sound will come out! It’s difficult in that when you have to press several keys at different times in both hands it puts quite a load on your brain. To help this issue, I present information in a way that helps to develop the neural pathways necessary for each finger and each hand to be independent.

I work with understanding rhythm and pitches visually on sheet music and aurally so that if you want to learn a piece from sheet music, you can do so, or if you want to learn a song by ear, you can do that as well. Having both of these skills working together makes the process of learning a new piece easier and quicker. I also teach you how to practice to make the most of your time at the piano, and also the best technique for you to avoid injury.

About The Studio

Studio

In-person lessons are done in my home studio, with a beautiful, well-maintained concert grand piano. The room is a comfortable, homey setting with high ceilings for great acoustics, making it a relaxing, enjoyable place to sing or play piano.

Policies

Lessons are paid on a per-month basis, for one lesson per week. The monthly amount does not change based on how many weeks there are in a given month, since there are months in the year that have 5 weeks, and some that have 3. This makes bookkeeping much easier for everyone.

    Rates
180 per month for weekly 45-minute lessons
240 per month for weekly 60-minute lessons

The following holidays are included in the above pricing and no lessons are scheduled: Labor Day (Sept. 2, 2024), Thanksgiving week (Nov. 25-29, 2024),  Christmas Break (Dec. 23, 2024 – Jan. 5, 2025), Spring Break (March 17-21, 2025), and Memorial Day (May 26, 2025). Any other lessons that you wish to take off can be rescheduled individually with me.

Summer lessons are pro-rated for however many lessons you wish to have in a given month.

Monthly lesson payment is due by the first lesson of each month.

A 1-day notice must be given prior to the lesson to be able to reschedule. Notice given right before the lesson or no-shows are forfeited.

I will always make up lessons for when the student is sick. Notice needs to be given to me as soon as possible prior to the lesson.

There are no refunds for lessons paid.

A 3-week prior notice must be given to discontinue lessons.

Online Lessons:

I use Discord or Zoom for online lessons. There are specific sound settings depending on what equipment you will be using (laptop, phone, Mac or PC, or tablet), so I like to schedule extra time at the beginning of the first lesson to test out the sound and video settings after I provide written instructions for you. Once we have this set up, I highly recommend staying with the same equipment and camera arrangement each time so we don’t spend valuable lesson time working out tech support issues. Once set up, however, online lessons can be quite effective and work well with some students.
